Post-Renovation Cleaning Checklist

Post-Renovation Cleaning Checklist

After a renovation, your space looks great — but it's not livable yet. Construction dust is finer than regular household dust, and it settles on every surface, inside every cabinet, and into every vent in your home. A standard cleaning won't cut it.

Here's what a proper post-renovation clean involves:

Dust removal — the big one: Fine construction dust from drywall, sanding, or concrete work gets everywhere. Every horizontal surface needs thorough wiping. This includes counters, shelves, window sills, baseboards, door frames, light fixtures, ceiling fan blades, and the tops of cabinets. Walls may need a wipe-down too, depending on the scope of the renovation.

Vents and air returns: Construction dust circulates through your HVAC system. All vent covers and air returns should be removed, cleaned, and reinstalled. This prevents dust from recirculating for weeks after the work is done.

Inside cabinets, drawers, and closets: Even closed storage accumulates dust during a renovation. Everything needs to be wiped inside and out before you put belongings back.

Windows: Window frames, tracks, and interior glass collect a lot of debris. Detailed cleaning of all window components is part of every post-reno job.

Floors: Depending on your flooring, this may involve scrubbing tile grout, detailed vacuuming of hardwood crevices, or multiple passes to remove embedded dust. Paint splatters and adhesive residue are common and need careful treatment.

Fixtures and hardware: New fixtures often have manufacturer labels, protective films, or fingerprints from installation. All hardware should be polished and cleaned.

Post-renovation cleaning typically takes 2-3x longer than a standard deep clean. The dust is persistent, and cutting corners means you'll be finding it for months.
